Each summer the countdown begins—how many days can I spend near some body type of water? Whether it’s a pool, lake, beach, river, or cold spring, my summer is not complete without spending quality time sunbathing and cooling off in refreshing waters. A pool day is an all day event filled with self-care, so the key to my perfect pool day is preparation.
Non-Negotiables
Let’s start with the non-negotiables. These are my foundational pool day items—no excuses, no exceptions:
- Swimsuit (an optional backup): One for swimming, one for lounging (if you don’t like feeling wet when you’re not in the water).
- Cover-up or sarong: Easy to throw on and instantly chic.
- Sandals or pool slides: For pool-to-lounge mobility.
- Quick-dry towel or Turkish towel (two): Dries fast, packs light, and feels luxe. Two towels: one to lounge on, and the other to dry off with prior to lounging.
- Wide-brim hat or bucket hat: Shade in style. Cowboy hats are have been my go-to lately.
- Sunglasses (polarized if possible): For eye protection, duh.
Convenience Crew
Next is the convenience crew. These are the underrated items that turn a “day at the pool” into an experience:
- Hair ties, silk scrunchies, or claw clips: Keep your hair cute and chlorine-free.
- Large tote or waterproof bag: Something roomy, wipeable, and stylish.
- Reusable water bottle (insulated): Hydration is a non-negotiable, especially when you can keep it cold.
- Snacks or mini cooler: Think fresh fruit, salty crisps, or something sweet. You know what you like.
- Book, magazine, or e-reader: Poolside reading is peak luxury.
- Journal and pen: Capture your thoughts, dreams, or that random genius idea that always hits when you’re finally still. Poolside clarity is real.
- Portable speaker (volume low): Set your soundtrack without being that person.
Skin Essentials
Since this is a self-care day, it’s only right that we take care of self with skin essentials to protect your skin and keep your summer glow intact.:
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+): Reapply every 2 hours. Yes, even if you’re melanin-blessed.
- Lip balm with SPF: Don’t forget your lips—they burn too.
- After-sun spray or aloe mist: For that cool-down refresh.
- Facial mist or setting spray: Hydrate and revive while you bask.
- Waterproof mascara (optional): Just enough oomph for selfies and side glances.
Snacks & Sips
Poolside vibes mean nothing if you’re hungry, parched, or stuck with soggy chips.
You don’t need a full picnic spread, but a few smart snacks and refreshing sips will keep your energy up and your mood light. Go for food that’s cool, hydrating, easy to eat, and mess-free.
Snack Like You Mean It with:
- Fresh fruit skewers: Watermelon, pineapple, grapes, or strawberries prepped and ready to go.
- Cucumber or veggie sticks & hummus: Crisp, cooling, and just enough crunch.
- Cheese cubes & crackers or mini charcuterie: Because you’re grown, and you snack accordingly.
- Nuts or trail mix: Portable protein that doesn’t melt in the sun.
- Pita chips & guac or tzatziki: Dip it. Eat it. Repeat.
- Frozen grapes or chocolate-covered banana bites: A sweet way to stay cool.
- Pomegranate & dark chocolate chips: Tart, juicy, and rich, this duo is not only a flavor bomb, it’s an antioxidant powerhouse. Sprinkle them together in a small cup or pack them in a chilled container. It’s giving grown.
Sip & Chill:
- Infused water (think cucumber-mint or citrus-berry): Looks fancy. Feels refreshing.
- Sparkling water or canned mocktails: Bubbly and pool-friendly.
- Iced tea or cold brew: For when you want a little caffeine with your sun.
- Matcha Spritz: Earthy, energizing, and just the right amount of fancy. Mix chilled matcha with sparkling water, a splash of lemon or yuzu juice, and a touch of honey or agave. Serve over ice for a refreshing sip that feels like a spa day in a cup.
Pro Tip: Pack everything in a mini cooler or insulated lunch tote to keep it fresh. No one wants warm cheese or wilted
Next-Level Extras
…and finally a few next-level extras to elevate your pool day from “nice” to chef’s kiss. (because you deserve, duh).
- Mini fan (USB or handheld): Because sometimes the sun does too much.
- Change of clothes & wet bag: Dry fit + smart storage = game changer.
- Light blanket or shawl: For when the breeze hits or you stay till sunset.
- Roll-on essential oil or travel fragrance: Keep it light, fresh, and smelling good.
Final Tip: Pack It the Night Before
Trust me…don’t wait until you’re halfway out the door to throw everything together. Lay it out the night before and double-check your bag so you can thank yourself later because a woman’s self-care pool day is not just about swimming, it’s about curating peace, presence, and a playlist that hits.
